Emergency services were called to a house on Ferntree Gully Road yesterday morning, where the 30-year-old woman was discovered with injuries.
Despite efforts at the scene, she was pronounced dead.
Police arrested a man nearby and took him into custody. He was later formally charged with murder.
The accused appeared before Melbourne Magistrates' Court remotely by video and was remanded in custody.
He is due to return before the court on 23 February 2027.
It is understood that the man and the woman were known to one another.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the woman's death and confirmed that consular assistance is being provided to those affected.
Investigations into the circumstances of the death are continuing.
