Met Éireann is keeping the bad news coming, with heavy rain set to batter the country over a ‘very wet’ week.

2026 has been a dreary year for weather so far, with most days bringing with them an onslaught of rainfall.

While Irish residents are eager for a change as spring arrives, it looks like we will be waiting a while yet.

Mild conditions have kicked off the week, though the temperatures are set to drop slightly in a few days.

In the meantime, heavy rain and wind can be expected all over the country.

Tuesday will be mostly dry in the east, but outbreaks of rain will develop in the west across the morning and spread inland.

Later in the night, mist and fog patches will form as drizzle takes widespread control.

Wednesday will be ‘cloudy and wet’, with widespread rain being replaced by scattered showers in the morning, though some will turn heavy.

Thursday will be similar with heavy rain moving across southern counties during the morning.

Met Éireann added: ‘Some heavy and persistent falls of rain expected together with some very strong and blustery winds during the afternoon and evening.’

Thursday night is forecast to be a tough one, starting ‘very wet and unsettled with rain, heavy at times and very strong and blustery winds’.

This follows warnings of a storm hitting the country on Thursday, with Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather citing current projections which point to gale-force winds.

He wrote on X: ‘The ECMWF model latest update once again shows risk of a storm Thursday night but other models don’t develop the low. Interesting one to follow.’

Following the wet night, Friday will be ‘cloudy with rain, heavy at times in the west’.

However, the evening looks set to be bright and clear after the rain moves on.

For the weekend, Met Éireann stated: ‘Current indications are for the unsettled weather to continue with rain, possibly heavy on Saturday with strong breezes. Sunday will see rain at times while temperatures across both days will reach 10 or 11 degrees.’
