Met Eireann have issued a Status Yellow wind warning for three counties, with "very strong" gusts forecasted.

This warning was issued for Donegal, Galway and Mayo. It will come into effect on Wednesday at 6am, remaining in place until 6pm that evening.

Issuing this alert, the national forecaster has warned that some loose objects may be "displaced", making driving and cycling conditions difficult. They also warned that fallen branches and trees will also be expected as the southwesterly winds take hold in Ireland.

“Large coastal waves combined with moderate surge may lead to wave overtopping in exposed coastal areas", they said.

Heavy rain is also expected to hit parts of the country amid this weather warning on Wednesday, with experts predicting "potential rainfall warnings".

On social media, Donegal Weather Channel boss, Kenneth McDonagh has said that Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Sligo and Leitrim will be the worst affected by these downpours. He expects 400mm to 50mm of rain to hit in parts of the northwest on Wednesday.

“Multiple weather models, has heavy persistent rain. Met Eireann will probably issue warnings closer to the time”, he said.

In their forecast for Wednesday, Met Eireann said:  “A windy day, it will be mostly dry at first with some sunny spells and just a few patches of light rain or drizzle about.

“Becoming cloudier in the west and north though, with rain following there in the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C, with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds", they added. “Heavy rain on Wednesday night affecting the southwest, west and north, will spread to the rest of the country on Thursday morning. So Thursday starting off wet and breezy".
