Snapchat is introducing a big change that will affect how you store your photos and videos. Starting in October 2026, Snapchat will limit free users to 5GB of storage for their Memories. If you go over this limit, you’ll need to choose one of three options:
Save all your Memories to your phone storage: Transfer your content to your device to free up space on Snapchat.
Pay €1.70 per month: Maintain unlimited storage for your Memories on Snapchat.
Subscribe to Snapchat+ for €3.40 per month: Receive 250GB of free storage, along with additional features like enhanced stories, early access to new tools, exclusive badges, and more.
If you're already a Snapchat+ subscriber, you'll automatically receive the 250GB storage benefit.
Snapchat’s Memories feature, launched in 2016, has become a core part of the app. Over the years, it has saved billions of snaps and videos, and the decision to introduce paid storage reflects Snapchat’s efforts to manage user data better and maintain high-quality service.
Snapchat is especially popular among younger users. As of 2025, it has hundreds of millions of daily active users, mostly aged 13 to 34, with a huge following among teens and young adults. In Ireland, the app is widely used by students and young professionals, making this change particularly relevant.
Since its launch in 2011, Snapchat has grown from a simple photo-sharing app into a full social platform. It now offers Stories, Discover, Spotlight, Snap Map, and My Eyes Only. Despite competition and occasional controversies, Snapchat has stayed popular by continuously adding new features and adapting to user needs.
For active users, it’s important to consider storage options. Check how much space your Memories take, weigh the cost of monthly fees, or explore alternative storage if you don’t want to pay. Planning ahead will help you continue enjoying Snapchat without losing your photos and videos.
