Irish football legend Roy Keane was visibly emotional during a recent episode of the Stick to Football podcast as he was shown a photograph of his late parents, Maurice and Marie Keane.

The image, taken outside Wembley Stadium after a Manchester United cup match, captured a proud moment for the Cork native and his family.

The photograph made him visibly emotional.

“You’re on about photos, look at that there. You’re on about family, the ups and downs of football. But when you see your family at Wembley after you’ve won a big game,” Keane said, trailing off before passing the photo to co-host Gary Neville.

Fellow host Ian Wright was seen comforting Keane, gently placing a hand on his back as he held back tears.

"That’s beautiful,” Wright told him, offering quiet support during the emotional exchange.

Keane's father, known affectionately as Mossie, died in 2019 at the age of 79 following a stroke he suffered the previous year. The photo clearly struck a chord with the former Manchester United captain, who rarely shows such vulnerability in public.

Also present during the moment was former England international Jill Scott, who reflected on the emotional impact of photographs.

“That’s why photographs are so good to keep, aren’t they?” she said. “Some people have the photographs instead of [having them] on their phone.”

Now 57, Keane enjoyed a storied career with Manchester United, winning the treble in 1999 and securing seven Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson. He reached the FA Cup final four times during his tenure with the club, cementing his place as one of the most accomplished Irish footballers of all time.

The emotional moment offered a rare glimpse into the personal side of the notoriously tough former midfielder, underscoring the deep family bonds that have shaped his journey both on and off the pitch.

Later in the show, after regaining his composure, Keane shared another light-hearted moment while looking at a childhood photo featuring himself and his siblings. Pointing to the image, the former Republic of Ireland captain remarked: “I’m in a United top there but that was my brother’s, I think the Spurs one was sold out,” joking about his early days as a Tottenham fan.

The episode also saw the former players bring in copies of their old contracts to look back on their professional careers.

One of Keane’s contracts revealed that his signing-on fee included annual payments of £1 million.

Among the personal clauses in the document was an arrangement for 20 return flights between Manchester and Cork, allowing Keane to regularly visit his family and children.

The contract also permitted Keane to represent the Republic of Ireland at international level — something he did with distinction. Over his international career, Keane played 67 times with the Irish team and scored nine goals for his country.
