Ryanair passengers have been urged to pack cardboard in their hand luggage due to a change implemented last year.
The unusual suggestion follows a change made by the airline to its baggage restrictions in September.
Ryanair increased its ‘personal bag’ allowance by 20% in line with new EU regulations, allowing basic fare passengers to bring a larger bag on board.
From September onwards, under-10 kg bags that fit beneath the seat in front were allowed to be up to 40cm x 30cm x 20cm.
Following the updated allowance, packing specialist Tom Schott from Schott Packaging noticed a potentially expensive error.
He has since issued a warning for Irish holidaymakers tempted to overstuff their bags.
Tom told the Mirror: ‘The new dimension is a game-changer, but only if you use it wisely.
‘The mistake is to simply cram more in. The real victory for passengers is using that volume to pack with structure. A well-packed bag is a compliant bag.’
Tom offered a variety of recommendations, including the utilisation of cardboard.
He continued: ‘Soft bags lose volume. A lightweight, snug-fitting cardboard box inside your bag provides a rigid frame, allowing you to use every corner and prevent the bulge that attracts gate staff.’
Tom also recommended using sealable bags to optimise space, as well as sorting items into smaller sections and safeguarding valuables.
He added: ‘Place a small, sturdy box in the centre of your bag, cushioned by clothes. This creates a crush-proof zone for chargers, adapters, and toiletries, preventing damage and leaks.’
Passengers were also advised to lay out their clothes before packing their bags.
This allows packers to see what fits beforehand and can lead to more ‘efficient packing’.
