Kourtney Khloe McCormick died in hospital after the incident that occurred on Sunday night.
The young girl was knocked down in the Springfarm Heights area at around 9.25pm.
She had recently turned six-years-old.
A 40-year-old woman who was driving the van was arrested on the scene. She has been released on bail to allow for further police enquiries.
Policers officers are continuing to investigate and are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have captured footage of what happened to contact them.
DUP MLA for Newry and Armagh, Gareth Wilson said "The loss of a young life is always particularly heartbreaking, and it will be felt right across the wider community," and that his thoughts and prayers are with the family.
The PSNI spokesperson said that “officers attended and the driver of the van, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene," she was then released on bail to "allow for further police enquiries”.
