The creators of Stranger Things have opened up about the emotional journey behind the show’s final chapter in a newly released trailer for an upcoming Netflix documentary.
The two-minute teaser for One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 offers fans a rare behind-the-scenes look at the making of the show’s fifth and final season. In the footage, creators Matt and Ross Duffer are seen reflecting on how the long-running sci-fi series would end, as well as addressing the cast and crew with visible emotion as filming comes to an end.
Several heartfelt moments from the cast appear throughout the trailer. Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, is shown becoming tearful during what looks like a script read-through alongside co-star Noah Schnapp. In one clip, Brown speaks candidly about the show’s conclusion, admitting she is not ready to say goodbye. Other cast members, including Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke and Natalia Dyer, are also seen hugging and crying together, highlighting the close bond formed over nearly a decade of working together.
The documentary focuses on the production of season five, which follows the central group of friends, Will, Dustin, Mike and Lucas, as they prepare for a final confrontation with the show’s main villain, Vecna, played by Jamie Campbell Bower. The concluding season was released in three parts and sparked intense discussion among fans, particularly due to its ambiguous ending and the unanswered questions surrounding Eleven’s fate.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Ross Duffer explained that the creative team always envisioned Eleven’s story ending away from the rest of the group. He said the writers never wanted to strip her of her powers, describing her as a symbol of magic and childhood wonder. According to Duffer, for the characters to truly grow up and for the story of Hawkins and the Upside Down to reach a meaningful close, Eleven had to leave.
He added that the team intentionally left the ending open, allowing the characters, and viewers, to believe in a hopeful future without spelling everything out. The Duffers felt this approach best represented the transition from childhood to adulthood and provided a more emotional sense of closure.
After the final episode aired on New Year’s Day, Brown marked the moment by posting a black-and-white photo from the set on social media, simply captioned: “Over and out.”
First released in 2016, Stranger Things became a global phenomenon and launched the careers of its young cast, including Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin and Noah Schnapp. The franchise has since grown to include a stage production and an upcoming animated spin-off.
One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 premieres on Netflix on 12 January.
