Oscar-nominated actor Ciarán Hinds is to receive the IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 IFTA Awards Ceremony, which will take place in Dublin next month.
The prestigious honour will be presented on Friday, 20 February, at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, celebrating Hinds’ exceptional contribution to the screen industry over a career spanning more than five decades. The award recognises both his Irish and international achievements, marking him as one of the most accomplished and respected actors of his generation.
Born in Belfast, Hinds has built an extraordinary body of work across film, television and theatre. Over the course of his career, he has collaborated with some of the world’s most influential filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Paul Thomas Anderson, Kenneth Branagh and John Boorman. His performances are noted for their emotional depth, quiet authority and remarkable versatility, whether portraying historical figures, complex villains or deeply human supporting characters.
Hinds’ extensive list of collaborators also includes many of the most celebrated actors in the industry. He has appeared alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, Liam Neeson, Daniel Craig, Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Ralph Fiennes, Ryan Gosling, Colin Farrell, Frances McDormand, Jennifer Lawrence, Helen Mirren, Nicolas Cage and Florence Pugh, among others.
Reacting to the announcement, Hinds expressed his appreciation for the recognition. “I am deeply grateful to IFTA for this recognition – their support for the cinematic and televisual arts over the past twenty years and more has been immense and I am truly honoured to receive it. Thank you,” he said.
Paying tribute to the actor, IFTA CEO Áine Moriarty highlighted both his talent and his character. “Ciarán Hinds is a modest giant and gentleman of an actor, who has deservedly become one of the most highly respected and versatile actors of his generation, working with world-renowned filmmakers and storytellers,” she said.
Moriarty added: “He is a performer of extraordinary depth, warmth and dignity, who commands the screen with his presence. Throughout his career, he has been a constant supporter of homegrown Irish productions, which is dear to his heart. The Irish Academy is honoured to pay tribute to Ciarán and to recognise his outstanding achievements.”
Meanwhile, anticipation is building ahead of the 2026 IFTA Awards, with the nominations set to be announced on Tuesday, 20 January.
