Adolescence star Stephen Graham has said that winning awards was not his motivation for working on the Netflix hit, insisting that getting such recognition was "not why we do it".
The Netflix hit, has achieved critical acclaim, having won accolades at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards this year.
Speaking recently, Stephen Graham who starred, co-created and wrote Adolescence, insisted that it was not about winning awards.
"It’s not a game of footy. Do you know what I mean? It’s not a competition about what we do", Graham said. "It’s subjective. It’s art. Art is subjective. It means different things to different people".
"It’s nice to be acknowledged by your peers. But ultimately, that’s not why we do it".
This comes as Adolescence was a big winner at the Golden Globes, with stars Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty winning acting awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series, and Best Supporting Actress respectively, while Stephen Graham landed the Best Actor in a TV Mini Series.
The show also won awards for Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture. It also won the same four prizes at the Critics Choice Awards. The show was also successful at the Emmy Awards, winning eight accolades on the night, with Graham, Cooper, and Doherty winning acting awards there too. More here.
Speaking about theses triumphs, Stephen Graham described the wins as "exceptionally surreal", before adding: "It didn’t feel real. It was a wonderful experience".
Elsewhere, Stephen Graham also spoke about the new season of hit show, A Thousand Blows.
The show, which launched on Disney+ earlier this month, sees Graham serve as executive producer alongside his wife, Hannah Walters, as well as starring as bare knuckle fighter, Henry 'Sugar' Goodson, who fought in the East End of London in the 1880s.
A Thousand Blows is based on a true story, following Jamaican immigrants in the bare-knuckle boxing circuit in the East End of London.
The actor revealed that the character came about as it is based on a photograph.
"It was this beautiful image of a black man who looks so regal, majestic and full of grace", he said. "And instantly, I’m curious, because I’m a mixed race kid myself, so I never got to see men like this.
"You want to know how he’s been able to take that photograph, what’s happened to him in order for him to be there in that part of his life".
Graham added that the image inspired his wife to ask creator Steven Knight to build "something" around the idea.
Season two of A Thousand Blows is available to watch on Disney+.
