The Princess of Wales and singer Jessie J shared an emotional embrace at the Royal Variety Performance in London this week, bonding over their respective battles with cancer in a moment that moved onlookers and performers alike.
The encounter took place at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday night, where Princess Kate and Prince William made their first red-carpet appearance in two years. During the post-show meet-and-greet, the couple spoke with performers including Stephen Fry — who was standing beside Jessie J in the line-up.
Earlier this year, the Princess of Wales revealed she is in remission from an undisclosed form of cancer, while Jessie J recently underwent a mastectomy as part of her treatment for breast cancer. When Kate reached the singer, the pair exchanged a warm greeting before sharing a deeply personal moment.
Jessie gently placed a hand on the Princess’s shoulder before telling her: “I just had breast cancer. I just want to give you a hug, cancer really puts life into perspective.” The two women then embraced, reflecting on the shock and emotional impact of receiving a cancer diagnosis while in the public eye.
Jessie, 37, performed her new song I’ll Never Know Why, written for her late bodyguard Dave, who died by suicide in 2021. Following the performance, Princess Kate told her it was “such a moving song.”
The singer responded: “It is such an important conversation. I just miss him and I want to help others,” later revealing that Prince William has asked her to support his mental-health work going forward.
Speaking afterward, Jessie described hugging the Princess as “a lovely moment between mothers who have each gone through their own cancer journey in the spotlight.”
The heartfelt exchange added a poignant note to one of the UK’s most prestigious annual events, highlighting the shared vulnerabilities behind two public figures’ resilience.
