Billy Joel has opened up about undergoing brain surgery after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare condition that had affected his balance, memory and ability to function.
The 77-year-old singer revealed that he had a shunt implanted in his brain to treat the condition during the latest episode of his SiriusXM show, The Billy Joel Channel.

Joel said he first realised something was wrong when he began experiencing problems with his balance.
“I had this sense of being on a boat, like this rocking motion. I wasn’t steady on my feet,” he recalled.
After being diagnosed with NPH, Joel agreed to undergo surgery to have a shunt implanted. The device helps drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain and can help relieve symptoms associated with the condition.

Joel said the procedure has already made a noticeable difference to his health.
“I agreed to do the shunt and I had a surgery, and they implanted a shunt in my brain and it actually improved things,” he said.
He explained that he had noticed improvements in several areas since the operation.
“My memory got better, my balance got a little better, my ability to function was better.”
The singer was diagnosed with NPH last year, having previously been forced to cancel a number of performances after experiencing health difficulties.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus can cause symptoms including problems with walking and balance, changes in thinking or memory and bladder problems. It can sometimes be treated with a shunt, which diverts excess fluid away from the brain.

Despite the health issues he has faced, Joel wanted to reassure fans that he remains positive about his recovery.
“I just want people to know, don’t worry about me. I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. I’m still here.”
Joel has spent more than five decades in the spotlight and is known for hits including Piano Man, Uptown Girl, We Didn’t Start the Fire and Just the Way You Are.
