Irish actor Chris O’Dowd is set to star alongside American comedian Bill Burr in Bender, a new coming-of-age comedy scheduled to film in Ireland this summer. The project, reported by entertainment industry publication Deadline, has been described as a blend of the irreverent teen humour of Superbad with the nostalgic, character-driven storytelling of Derry Girls.
The screenplay has been written by Irish screenwriter Adrian Cunningham, while direction will be handled by Adam Bernstein, whose previous credits include work on Better Call Saul. Set against the backdrop of the Papal visit to Ireland in 1979, the film centres on a group of teenage outsiders navigating adolescence during a time of social tension and economic hardship. The story combines historical context with youthful mischief, promising both humour and emotional depth.
Chris O’Dowd will portray a self-made family man struggling to maintain stability as multiple aspects of his life begin to unravel. His character faces mounting pressure as his business falters, his marriage deteriorates, and his faith is tested during a period of recession. The role marks a return to Irish-set storytelling for O’Dowd, who has built an international career across film and television.
Bill Burr, known for his sharp comedic style, will take on the role of a gruff American record shop owner. His character becomes an unlikely mentor to the teenage protagonists, encouraging them to seize what he frames as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. With Galway expected to be flooded with visitors during the Papal event, he convinces the group that the extraordinary circumstances might offer their best—and possibly only—chance to experience key rites of passage before finishing school.
Production duties on Bender will include Dublin-based company Reflektor Media, further highlighting the strong Irish involvement behind the film both in front of and behind the camera. The combination of local talent and international performers suggests the project is aiming for broad appeal while staying rooted in a distinctly Irish setting.
Meanwhile, O’Dowd is also preparing for the release of his next project, the comedy The Sheep Detectives. The film is set to open in cinemas on Friday, 8 May, with preview screenings running from Saturday, 2 May through Monday, 4 May.
