Public moments rarely arrive without context, and in the Beckham family, context currently carries weight.
On Tuesday, David Beckham paid an emotional tribute to his wife Victoria Beckham after she was awarded one of France’s most prestigious cultural honours, doing so against the backdrop of an increasingly visible rift with their eldest son.
Victoria was named a Chevalière de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a knighthood bestowed by the French Ministry of Culture in recognition of significant contributions to the arts and literature. The honour places her among an international group of creatives whose influence has extended beyond national borders.
At the ceremony in Paris, she was accompanied by sons Cruz and Romeo, daughter Harper, and extended family and friends, including Anna Wintour, Vogue’s global editorial director.
David Beckham wrote:
“We are so proud of you and all that you have achieved Victoria Beckham. Being named a Chevaliere de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture… nobody deserves it more than you x We love you.”
The words were celebratory, affectionate, and pointedly unified.
At the same time, Victoria’s eldest son Brooklyn Beckham shared a video montage on TikTok showing himself and his wife Nicola Peltz on what appeared to be a private getaway. The timing was notable. The post followed Brooklyn’s recent public accusations that his parents had attempted to sabotage his relationship and prioritised “Brand Beckham” over his marriage.
The family divide has been rumbling since Brooklyn’s 2022 wedding to Nicola, the daughter of billionaire Nelson Peltz, but intensified sharply last week when he stated online that he had no desire to reconcile.
In a series of Instagram story posts, Brooklyn alleged that his parents had been “trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding, and it hasn’t stopped,” and claimed his wife had been “disrespected” by members of the family.
Against that tension, the Paris ceremony unfolded with visible absences. While Cruz attended with his partner Jackie Apostel and Romeo with his girlfriend Kim Turnbull, Brooklyn and Nicola were not present.
Victoria, 51, addressed the honour in her speech, saying:
“I’m so proud to be British but France is one of the few places fashion is treated with the seriousness it deserves, as a form of art. So to be recognised here and embraced in this way is a profound privilege, one that reflects decades of commitment and dedication.”
She also thanked France’s Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, as well as her family, singling out her husband in particular.
“Thank you also to business partners who believed in me, my family, and especially David, my husband, and original investor.I couldn’t be more grateful, you are my everything.”
For Victoria Beckham, the honour marks another milestone in a transformation that began with global pop stardom in the Spice Girls and evolved into a respected luxury fashion house founded in 2008.
