18 years after leaving the square for a second time, an EastEnders star is set to return to the soap for a ‘poignant storyline.’

When she was on the show originally in the 90s, the character of Clare Bates was caught up in several heavy-hitting storylines, including ones about domestic violence.

Clare, who is played by Gemma Bissix, then left EastEnders when she was 14 in 1993 to train to be an electrician and returned briefly in 2008.

Although the content matter is tough, Gemma is delighted to be back on EastEnders, saying ‘it’s… a privilege to be involved in Nigel's poignant dementia storyline.’

'I think it's a storyline that sadly resonates with so many people and it's been a real full circle moment for me, as EastEnders is where I learnt my craft as I was on the show from the age of nine,’ she added.

EastEnders has been working with Dementia UK to write the storyline.
