An emotional Ronan Keating opened up about the devastating impact of the tragic of his brother Ciaran.
The Boyzone star spoked about this on his recently aired BBC show, The Atlantic, alongside his nephew Ruairí, Ciaran's son.
Ciaran Keating died in a car accident in 2023, after his vehicle collided with a car driving with 22 year old Dean Harte from Mayo. Ciaran had been travelling with his wife Annemarie to watch their footballer son Ruairí play for Cork City.
Sadly, Ciaran died at the scene, with Annemarie and Dean receiving treatment for non life threatening injuries.
In February last year, Dean Harte was given a 17 month suspended sentence for careless driving causing death.
Speaking about this on his show, Ronan Keating, spoke about the loss of his brother with Ruairí.
"I never get to say it but… I was the baby,' he says to his nephew Ruairi in the show. 'He was my older brother, my eldest brother, and he’s my hero", Ronan said.
Admitting that he missed out on doing a lot of things with Ciaran due to his tour commitments with Boyzone, Ronan continued: "I always looked up to him, you know. I joined the band, and I had to kind of grow up very quickly, and I missed stuff between us, and because of that, I lost a lot. I lost a lot and made a lot of sacrifices".
The singer also said that he now understands why Ciaran moved away and created a life for himself in the west of Ireland, after filming this BBC doc.
"He [Ciaran] made the decision to make a life for his family. He left Dublin, and he went to the west, and I think this journey that I’m on, you know, coming here and doing this, is me trying to understand more about Ciaran’s choice, so that I can somehow grieve and let go, because I found it very hard", Keating said.
Elsewhere, Ronan and his nephew Ruairí shared how difficult it has been to try and move on with their lives since Ciaran's death.
"Oh, man, it’s hard enough for us as siblings. I can’t imagine where you are. You know, I’ve kind of parked my emotions for the last two years. I haven’t been able to really deal with it. I haven’t been able to deal with the loss, you know", Ronan said.
At this point, Ruairí added: "It’s the same for me playing football too. I always look up and still think I can see him there. It’s always the hardest part as well after games, I used to check my phone".
"The first thing I’d see is my dad’s name, looking at my phone and not seeing that anymore. It’s really hard. I know he can see me, and I know he’s watching", he added.
Ronan then said to him: "He was so proud of you, and he will still be so proud of you in everything that you do, all of you kids, you were his world, you know, pride and joy".
Earlier this month, Ronan Keating broke his silence on social media after his ex wife Yvonne Connolly got remarried in New York. Find out more on this here.
