There’s a new TV show everyone seems to be talking about, and Irish viewers are clearly getting in on it.
Furious, starring Belfast actor Lola Petticrew and Shameless star Emmy Rossum, has topped the list of the most-watched TV shows in Ireland for August, according to streaming data from JustWatch.

The crime drama follows FBI agent Alice Black, played by Rossum, as she investigates a mysterious female serial killer. As the investigation develops, Alice’s own past begins to become intertwined with the case, and the line between justice and revenge starts to blur.

Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, the series has received a huge response from critics.
Furious currently holds a 98% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes from 61 reviews, alongside an 88% audience score. It also has a 7.8/10 rating on IMDb.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus describes it as a tense thriller driven by Rossum’s performance, while recent reviews have praised the show for its intelligence, dark humour and willingness to tackle difficult themes without giving audiences easy answers.

It’s a crime thriller, but Furious is more complicated than a straightforward police procedural. The story looks at trauma, abuse, institutional failure and the different ways people respond to injustice. Critics have particularly praised the way the series keeps its characters morally complicated, rather than dividing them neatly into heroes and villains.
A major reason for the praise is the cast.
Emmy Rossum takes the lead as Alice Black, a former NYPD homicide detective who is now a probationary FBI agent. Rossum is perhaps best known for playing Fiona Gallagher in Shameless, as well as playing Christine in the 2004 film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, a role which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She also serves as an executive producer on Furious.

But for Irish viewers, there is an especially good reason to tune in.
Lola Petticrew plays Catherine Grace, the mysterious woman at the centre of the investigation.
The Belfast-born actor has built up an impressive body of work in recent years, including Dating Amber, Bloodlands, Say Nothing and Tuesday.

Petticrew gives one of the show’s standout performances as Catherine, a character who is difficult to understand, unpredictable and increasingly compelling as her story is revealed.
The performance has attracted particular praise from critics, with The Daily Beast calling it one of television’s best performances.

The main cast also includes Scoot McNairy as Detective Danny Kelly, Quincy Tyler Bernstine as FBI agent Nora Washington, Jake Lacy as Marshall, Rob Yang as FBI agent Frank Choi and Steve Way as Alden.

Furious is made up of eight episodes, with the first season now complete. It has also already been renewed for a second season.
And Irish viewers clearly have been watching.
JustWatch’s August streaming chart, covering TV shows watched in Ireland between August 1 and August 31, puts Furious at number one. Lioness takes second place, followed by Lanterns at number three and Silo at number four. House of the Dragon is fifth, with Widow’s Bay in sixth.

Ted Lasso is seventh on the chart, followed by Reacher in eighth place. Sterling Point comes in at number nine, while One Hundred Years of Solitude rounds out the top ten.
