Galway footballerSeánFitzgerald is swapping championship football for the Love Island villa after officially being confirmed as one of the latest contestants for the upcoming series of the hit reality show.
The 25-year-old Bearna and Galway senior footballer will join a fresh batch of Islanders when the new season kicks off next month, alongside Scottish videographer Ellie and Birmingham model Samraj.
Already a familiar face to GAA fans, Seán — known to many as “Fitzy” — has also built a huge online following thanks to his energetic TikTok videos, comedy sketches and glimpses into his life as a primary school teacher. His appearance on the show comes after eagle-eyed supporters noticed his absence during Galway’s recent provincial final clash with Roscommon, sparking speculation that villa rumours were true.
Since making his senior debut for Galway in 2022, Seán has collected four Connacht SFC titles and played a key role during the county’s run to the 2024 All-Ireland final against Armagh. But away from the pitch, he has been quietly carving out a second career as a social media personality, amassing more than 94,000 followers on TikTok and a further 25,000 on Instagram.
The Galway native has never hidden his interest in joining the dating show. Earlier this year, he shared a tongue-in-cheek “application video” online in a bid to land a place in the villa.
“Love Island, please have me, and this is why,” he joked in the clip, before launching into chaotic dancing and self-deprecating humour about his personality.
In another moment from the viral audition tape, Seán admitted he would probably bring a mischievous streak to the villa.
“How has no one decided to scare someone while they’re kissing or doing whatever? If I saw that on Love Island, I’d be crying laughing,” he said.
The footballer also confessed that he struggles to approach women in a “normal Irish way,” joking that he tends to throw all of his energy and eccentricities at someone immediately to see if they can keep up.
Despite his growing fame, Seán has kept one foot firmly grounded in everyday life and continues to work as a primary school teacher — something fans believe could make him an unlikely peacemaker among the Islanders when tensions inevitably flare.
Off the field, his passions are far simpler. The Galway man previously revealed his love for nights out in Coppers despite not drinking alcohol, while also naming Boojum and chicken wings from Seven among his all-time favourite things.
And in true GAA fashion, Seán also admits to being deeply superstitious before matches.
“I always have to wear a jumper or jacket over my jersey before a game, no matter what the weather is,” he revealed.
Now, with the villa doors about to open, GAA fans will be watching closely to see if Seán can follow in the footsteps of previous Irish reality TV success stories — and perhaps even shoot his shot all the way to the Love Island final.
