Irish designer Paul Costelloe, one of the biggest household names in Irish and British fashion, has passed away aged 80.

Having started his career at Grafton Academy of Fashion Design, Costelloe soon made his move to the fashion capitals of Milan, Paris and New York and later, London. He then set up his own label, Paul Costelloe Productions in 1979.

Costelloe, who presented collections at London Fashion Week for 35 years, died last night in London.

Paul Costelloe's stellar career saw him appointed personal designer to Princess Diana in 1983, a collaboration which continued until her tragic death in 1997.

In 1998, Costelloe caused controversy when he claimed that Irish women lacked style, saying: "Irish women have difficulty with style because it's not in their inner nature... like the Italians".

But earlier this year, Costelloe stated that his views had changed, as he felt Ireland was now more European than years ago.

Over the last two decades, Costelloe had also collaborated with Dunnes Stores to create a hugely successful line in fashion and homewear. He was the clothing designer for the inaugural Ireland Fashion Week in October.

His death was confirmed by his family, who said in a statement that they are  "deeply saddened to announce the passing of Paul Costelloe following a short illness".

The statement added: "He was surrounded by his wife and seven children and passed peacefully in London".

His family had requested for privacy at this time.
