Leonardo DiCaprio has paid tribute to the late actor Robert Redford, who recently passed away aged 89.

Redford was best known for starring roles in All The President’s Men, Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid and The Sting as well as his activism. His work in film also stretched to directing, where he earned an Oscar for Ordinary People, as well as directing A River Runs Through It.

Paying tribute to Redford, DiCaprio had this to say.

"Very sad news, very sad day", the actor said at the London premiere of One Battle After Another.

He continued: "We lost an absolute legend in our industry. I admire him not only for his work as an actor, but also as a director of Quiz Show".

"We have a film tonight that we’re premiering, which is a political thriller in a lot of ways, and he was the one who created the foundation for all that, with All The President’s Men, Three Days Of The Condor", he added.

"But more so than anything, I’ve said it over and over again, he was an avid environmental advocate, was a member of the NRDC (Natural Resources Defence Council) like me, and he was a hero to a lot of people in our industry, including myself, so it’s a huge loss".

Robert Redford married his second wife, Sibylle Szaggers Redford in 2009, having been married to his previous wife Lola Van Wagenen from 1958 to 1985. The pair had four children together, including Scott who died in infancy, Shauna, Amy and James, who passed away from bile duct cancer aged 58.
