Lisa Kudrow has revisited one of television’s most iconic debates — and this time, she’s changed her mind.
The actress, best known for playing Phoebe Buffay on Friends, has revealed she’s now taken a different stance on the long-running question: were Ross and Rachel really “on a break”?
The debate dates back to season three of the hit sitcom, when Ross Geller (played by David Schwimmer) and Rachel Green (played by Jennifer Aniston) temporarily split — only for Ross to sleep with another woman shortly after.
While Ross maintained they were “on a break,” Rachel famously disagreed, fuelling a storyline that would stretch across multiple seasons and become one of the most debated moments in TV history.
Back in 2021, during the show’s reunion special, Kudrow sided with Ross — a view shared by much of the cast, including Aniston, Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, and the late Matthew Perry.

However, speaking recently, the 62-year-old admitted: “I’ve switched.” She added bluntly: “Ross was ridiculous, what a baby! You can’t plan a future with that guy.”
The renewed debate highlights just how enduring Friends remains, more than two decades after it first aired in 1994.
The sitcom ran for 10 seasons until 2004 and has since become one of the most-watched and rewatched shows globally, thanks in large part to streaming platforms.
It continues to attract new generations of viewers, with its cultural impact stretching far beyond its original run — from catchphrases like “we were on a break” to its influence on modern sitcoms.

Interestingly, public opinion hasn’t always aligned with Kudrow’s latest take.
A 2019 survey by dating app Plenty of Fish found that 60% of viewers sided with Ross, believing the couple were indeed on a break. However, the results also revealed a gender divide, with more women backing Rachel’s perspective — reflecting how the storyline still sparks debate in real-world relationship discussions.
Kudrow’s change of heart comes as she has begun rewatching the series for the first time in years.
She previously admitted she avoided watching the show out of embarrassment, joking that she’d be “mortified” if anyone caught her.
However, she returned to it following the death of her co-star Matthew Perry in 2023, describing the experience as part of the grieving process. “It felt like part of the remembering, grieving, remembering, all that, and just enjoying, and celebrating,” she said.
Revisiting the show has also given Kudrow a fresh appreciation for her castmates.
She praised their performances, singling out each for their comedic timing and impact, and described Perry as a “genius” who consistently impressed her during filming.
The experience has even led to unexpected moments of laughter — including one scene involving Joey Tribbiani that left her in tears.
Speaking about the moment, Kudrow recalled watching an episode featuring a guest appearance from Alec Baldwin, where Joey mistakes an oyster for something far less appetising.
The scene made her laugh so much that she had to message LeBlanc afterwards, telling him how funny it still was decades later.
Now, with fresh eyes on the series, Kudrow says it feels like watching someone else on screen — but that hasn’t dulled her enjoyment. Instead, it’s reinforced just how strong the show remains, both comedically and culturally.
And with her updated stance on one of its biggest debates, it’s clear that even those closest to Friends are still rethinking its most famous moments years later.
