Liza Minnelli has spoken candidly about what she describes as a “traumatising and insane” marriage to late producer David Gest, revealing she felt more like a “prisoner” than a partner during their short-lived union.

Minnelli, one of the most celebrated performers of the 20th century, is no stranger to the spotlight. The daughter of Hollywood legend Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli, she carved out her own iconic career across film, stage and music. She won the Academy Award for her unforgettable performance in Cabaret, and is one of the rare entertainers to achieve EGOT status — earning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony over the course of her decades-long career.

Gest, meanwhile, was a music promoter and television personality known for his flamboyant style and high-profile friendships, particularly with Michael Jackson. He produced the 2001 television special Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration, which brought together major stars and generated global attention. Though often in celebrity circles, Gest’s career was frequently overshadowed by controversy and legal disputes.

Minnelli and Gest married in 2002 in a lavish New York ceremony attended by A-list guests. At the time, the wedding was widely covered, framed as a glamorous union between two well-connected entertainment figures. However, the marriage quickly unravelled. The couple separated just over a year later, after approximately 16 months together.

Their split marked the beginning of a prolonged and acrimonious legal battle. Both filed lawsuits against each other, alleging misconduct and financial wrongdoing. Their divorce was not finalised until 2007, years after they had stopped living together.

In her upcoming memoir, Minnelli offers her most direct account yet of what she says was happening behind closed doors. She claims Gest controlled nearly every aspect of her life, from her schedule to her movements, and accuses him of financially “robbing” her during their marriage. According to excerpts, she describes feeling monitored and isolated, saying the 16 months they were together “felt like 16 years.

“I was legally his wife, in truth, I was his prisoner,” she writes, recounting how she was expected to report her whereabouts at all times. In one incident she describes as particularly distressing, she says she was photographed by a hired paparazzo while out to lunch with friends — an episode she found deeply humiliating and traumatic.

She also characterises Gest’s temper as frightening and says she felt betrayed and wounded by the experience. “I was disgusted, I felt betrayed, humiliated, ripped off and wounded,” she writes, adding that it became clear to her the marriage had to end.

Gest consistently denied many of Minnelli’s claims during his lifetime. He later alleged that he had been physically assaulted during the relationship — accusations Minnelli strongly denied. The back-and-forth allegations played out publicly for years, contributing to a media circus that contrasted sharply with the glitz of their wedding day.

Gest died in 2016 at the age of 62. A coroner ruled his death the result of a stroke.

For Minnelli, now in her late seventies, the memoir represents a rare moment of personal reflection after a lifetime in the public eye. Her career has been defined by extraordinary highs — Broadway triumphs, classic film performances, sold-out concert tours — but also by very public personal struggles, including health issues and previous marriages.

She has been married four times, and has often spoken about searching for stability amid fame and family legacy. Her marriage to Gest was her fourth and final.

Minnelli’s decision to speak now suggests a desire to reclaim her own narrative. For decades she has been portrayed through the lens of her mother’s legacy, her marriages, or tabloid drama. This time, she’s framing the story herself.
