Los Angeles, October 1, 2025 — Pop icon Madonna has candidly shared details about a life-threatening health crisis she experienced in June 2023, which left her unconscious for four days. In her first-ever podcast appearance on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose,” the 67-year-old singer described how a sudden bacterial infection led to sepsis, requiring her to be placed in an induced coma and on a ventilator.

Madonna recounted the rapid onset of her illness: “One minute I was alive and dancing around, and the next minute, I was in the ICU of a hospital.” She explained that after being taken off the ventilator and regaining the ability to breathe on her own, she was diagnosed with sepsis—a severe and often fatal response to infection. “I had sepsis, and it can kill you,” Madonna stated.

Despite her initial optimism about a swift recovery, Madonna faced significant challenges. She described feeling completely drained, unable to get out of bed, and uncertain when the ordeal would end. “I always saw myself as superwoman,” she admitted. “I thought, ‘I’m going to kick this. I’ll be good. I’ll get back into rehearsals.’" However, the reality was far harsher.

Her recovery was deeply supported by her spiritual practice of Kabbalah, particularly the concept of "radical acceptance" taught by her teacher, Eitan Yardeni. This practice helped her mentally navigate the aftermath of her illness.

During her induced coma, Madonna experienced a profound vision where she was visited by her late mother, who died in 1966. She recalled her mother asking if she wanted to “come with her.” Madonna declined, later realizing that her choice symbolized unfinished emotional business—particularly her need to forgive. This vision prompted Madonna to heal strained relationships, most significantly with her estranged brother, Christopher Ciccone. The two reconciled before his death in October 2024, with Madonna describing their final moments together as profoundly healing.

Miraculously, Madonna resumed her Celebration World Tour in October 2023, just a few months after her hospitalization. She described it as a "f---ing miracle" to be performing again. The tour concluded in May 2024.

Reflecting on her ordeal, Madonna acknowledged the inevitability of suffering in life, regardless of wealth or privilege. “There’s no way we’re going to escape suffering,” she said. “Even if we grow up with wealth and privilege, our challenges and our suffering are going to come to us in a different way.”
