Margot Robbie has said she loves watching romantic films for the sense of “escape” they provide, as she prepares for the release of Wuthering Heights, the latest big-screen adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel.

The 35-year-old Australian actress stars as Catherine Earnshaw opposite Jacob Elordi’s Heathcliff in the film, which brings the novel’s intense and tragic love story to cinemas next Friday.

Speaking on the rain-soaked red carpet at the London premiere, Robbie reflected on the enduring appeal of romance on screen, telling the Press Association:

“I love watching romantic films. I love the escape that it offers, often diving into a world — especially like this one — which is so big and cinematic. A time without cellphones often makes things feel more romantic.”

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, here's a sneak peak of what's in store:

Praise for Director Emerald Fennell

Robbie also spoke about working with director Emerald Fennell, who both wrote and directed the adaptation. Addressing the pressure of reimagining such a beloved literary work, Robbie — who also served as a producer on the film — said Fennell’s approach was key:

“Knowing how much the book means to Emerald was the best place to start. Knowing that she was writing it from a place of massive respect and love for the original source material was the most important thing.”

A Gothic Premiere Look Rich in Literary Detail

For the premiere, Robbie wore a sheer, corseted Gothic gown by Dilara Findikoglu, featuring moss-green blooming seams and a matching choker. She completed the look with a replica of Charlotte Brontë’s bracelet, believed to have been woven from the hair of her sisters Emily and Anne.

The actress said the accessory reflected the attention to detail woven throughout the film, helping to honour Brontë’s legacy.

Reuniting With Jacob Elordi

Wuthering Heights reunites Robbie with Jacob Elordi, following their collaboration on Emerald Fennell’s 2023 psychological thriller Saltburn, in which Elordi starred and Robbie worked as a producer.

Charli XCX Soundtrack and Release Date

The film also features a soundtrack written by Charli XCX, who was initially brought on to contribute a single track but ultimately went on to create a full accompanying album.

The album includes tracks such as Chains of Love, Wall of Sound, and House, the latter featuring John Cale of the Velvet Underground.

Wuthering Heights will premiere in cinemas on February 13, with the soundtrack album released on the same day.
