Nicholas Hoult’s brief stint as an announced cast member of HBO’s Harry Potter series has come to an end, with Kit Harington stepping into the role of Gilderoy Lockhart for the show’s second season.

HBO confirmed the casting change on Monday, August 24, saying the switch was the result of a scheduling issue. “Before we begin year two at Hogwarts, there has been a slight change due to schedule,” the official Harry Potter account said in a statement shared on Instagram Stories. “Kit Harington will be stepping into the role of Gilderoy Lockhart.”

Hoult, 36, was announced as Lockhart on August 11, but his departure has attracted considerable attention because of the wider controversy surrounding the Harry Potter franchise and author J.K. Rowling.

The announcement of Hoult’s casting had already prompted criticism from some fans and members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly because Rowling remains closely involved with the television adaptation as an executive producer. Rowling has faced years of criticism over comments about transgender people and her support for campaigns concerning sex-based rights.

Following news of Hoult’s departure, some critics questioned whether scheduling conflicts were the complete explanation for his exit and called on the actor to address the controversy publicly.

“Citing ‘scheduling conflicts’ and not the eighteen elephants in the room is such coward s**t,” one critic wrote on X.

Another questioned why Hoult had not issued a statement explaining his decision, writing that an apology would be necessary for him to regain the goodwill of some fans.

Others expressed frustration that the reported reason for Hoult’s departure did not indicate that he had reconsidered his involvement with the franchise. “Interesting to point out that Nicholas Hoult isn’t out of it bc of backlash, it’s merely scheduling conflicts,” one post said.

Hoult has not publicly suggested that the controversy influenced his decision to leave, and there is currently no indication that his departure was connected to the backlash over Rowling.

Harington, 39, is now set to take on the part of Lockhart, the charismatic but fraudulent Defence Against the Dark Arts professor introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Kenneth Branagh portrayed the character in the 2002 film adaptation.

The casting change also reunites Harington with the wizarding world in a new way. He previously voiced Lockhart in Audible’s Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions in 2025. According to Deadline, the actor was excited to take over the television role.

The second season is expected to adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, with Harington joining a growing ensemble that includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy.

The young leads are played by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

Production on the first season began in July 2025, with the series scheduled to debut on HBO Max in December. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is set to premiere on December 25.

The television adaptation is being written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod also serving as an executive producer and directing several episodes. Rowling remains involved in the production as an executive producer.

While Hoult’s exit has officially been attributed to scheduling conflicts, the circumstances have ensured that the controversy surrounding the franchise remains part of the conversation surrounding the new series. For some fans and trans rights advocates, an actor’s decision to participate in the production is viewed as an implicit acceptance of Rowling’s involvement and public views, while others continue to separate the work of the actors from the author’s political positions.
