The reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer has been axed, according to Sarah Michelle Geller.
The US actress, who had played Buffy Summers in the original series, confirmed this news via a video shared over the weekend, claiming that Hulu, the streaming service who were originally set to air the series, had decided "not to move forward" with it.
This comes after Geller had previously announced that the show would be revived last year, saying that she had been in talks with director Chloe Zhao.
Speaking last year, Geller wrote on Instagram: "Our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us".
She also added that she did "shock" by agreeing to continue the conversation "until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea". More on this story here.
Now, Sarah Michelle Geller has shared this message on social media, confirmed that the project has been axed.
"I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me", she said. "Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale".
"I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy's stylish, yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that".
Geller then signed off by referencing one of the show's infamous quotes.
"I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me".
In the original series, Buffy tried to navigate her way through high school, as well as hunting and fighting vampires, demons and other creatures.
Alongside Geller, the show also starred Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and the late Michelle Trachtenberg.
Trachtenberg passed away after being found unresponsive at her luxury Manhattan apartment, with New York City's medical examiner later confirming that she died following complications with diabetes. More on this here.
