The film which has reportedly been in the works since the 2022 documentary 'Nothing Compares', is being directed by Josephine Decker with the script from Irish writer Stacey Gregg.
Nine Daughters founder Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly and Oscar winner Iain Canning and Emile Sherman from See-Saw will produce the new film alongside Neil Chordia and Tim Clark who will serve as executive producers. It has been reported by Variety that the BBC will be funding the production of the upcoming biopic.
The biopic will explore O'Connors early life and how she started in the music industry. It will tell the story of how a young woman for Dublin gained popularity not only for her music but for the impact she made with her efforts to draw attention to the crimes committed by the Catholic Church in Ireland.
O'Connor was not only a musician but a passionate activist, she used her platform to speak up about sexism within the music industry and corruption within the Irish Catholic Church. At just 25 years old, the singer tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live, which was followed by a lot of controversy.
O'Connor passed in 2023, aged 56, after a number of hit records such as 'Nothing Compares 2 U'.
