Sophie Turner has said she expects to be playing Lara Croft for years to come as Amazon prepares its major new Tomb Raider television adaptation.
The series, produced for Amazon Prime Video, is currently filming its first season and is expected to debut later this year. While a second season has not yet been officially confirmed, Turner says she is preparing for a long-term commitment to the role.
“Right now, my focus is Tomb Raider. It has been for quite a while and will be for a while to come,” Turner said, adding that she began training for the physically demanding role in 2024.

She also spoke about the contrast between herself and the iconic video game character. “[Lara Croft] is so different from me and my personality – there is an element of her that can be fairly toxic, but there is also an element of her that is so focused and determined,” she said.
Turner added that her own personality is very different from the character she is portraying, describing herself as a “worrier” and “neurotic”, while Croft is portrayed as intensely driven and fearless.
She said she enjoys the long-form nature of television storytelling, noting: “I was birthed by Game Of Thrones: TV is my bread and butter, and I love developing a character over years.”
The adaptation is being written and co-produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known for Fleabag, who said the project is a chance to bring a globally loved character to television in a new way.
The cast also includes a strong ensemble featuring Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Bill Paterson, and several others.
Waller-Bridge previously said the team behind the show is deeply passionate about the project and committed to exploring Lara Croft beyond her traditional action-hero image.

Turner has also suggested that this version of Lara Croft will move away from the character’s traditional portrayal as a “sex symbol”, focusing instead on her intelligence, capability and personal drive.
Alongside the series, the Tomb Raider franchise is also expanding in gaming, with a remake of the original title expected later this year and a new instalment, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, scheduled for release in 2027.
With filming underway and anticipation building, Amazon’s Tomb Raider looks set to become one of the platform’s biggest upcoming fantasy-adventure releases.
