The World Health Organisation's Irish epidemiologist Dr. Michael Ryan is set to deliver a keynote speech this week at a Galway Traveller Movement Workshop.

Executive Director of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme, Ryan has become a recognisable face over the course of the pandemic. He has a history of leading teams deployed to deal with a variety of outbreaks, and has worked with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help eradicate infectious diseases in Africa.

The workshop intends to highlight the impact of the pandemic on the Travelling community in Galway. Members will speak of their experiences dealing with COVID over the past year and a half, and of the long term consequences for the community. The meeting will highlight the mental health as well as physical effects of the pandemic.

The workshop will also feature Dr. Aileen Kitching, Consultant in Public Health for the Galway area. Kitching has played a pivotal role in coordinating the response to addressing the various issues arising within the Traveller community as a result of the pandemic.

The event takes place online on Wednesday July 7th. Registration can be made through eventbrite.
