Official in France have estimated that there have been almost 1000 extra deaths recorded in France during the heatwave than compared to regular numbers.

The current heatwave that is sweeping across Europe brought France to temperatures of over 40c. Public events such as Festivals had to be cancelled for safety reasons.

Sante Publique, the public health agency in France have said "Since June 24, approximately 1,000 additional deaths (unconsolidated figures) have been observed compared to the deaths recorded in previous months".

Currently the mortality count is preliminary, with the cause of death still unknown in some cases however the government suspects that the causes are mostly heat related. So far the average age of mortality is over 65 however 3 toddlers were killed in the heat.

It is currently expected that the death toll will rise when more statistics come out, especially as care homes and hospitals catch up.

Officials have said that this heatwave is not over and in fact is the start of many more of its kind. The cause of this extreme and deadly heatwave has been linked to Global Warming and has been described as entirely man made by scientists.

It is the worst heatwave ever recorded in Europe.
