Coalition party leaders are to meet next week in order to discuss the possibility of introducing an outright ban on E-Scooters.
Leaders are to meet to discuss the topic next Monday, after an options paper, outlining the pros and cons of a number of possible policies is being prepared for Junior Transport Minister, Seán Cannery, according to reports in the Irish Independent.
According to Government sources, it is to too early to say what outcome will be reached before the meeting between Mr Canney, Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris.
In the Dáil, Minister Harris said that he was remaining open minded about what option should be taken when it comes to this issue.
“I have heard a lot of comments in recent days. Do we ban them? Do we put in place a more robust regulatory system because there is not one in place today? I have an open mind", he said. “This is now at a tipping point where we need to move, and move quickly. I would like to see a swift set of proposals coming from the Government on this".
Last night, Mr Canney told the Irish Independent that “all options are on the table”.
He added: “I’m not ruling anything out at this point. We need to hear all the expert advice and look at all the options and take strong action on this serious issue".
Elsewhere, the Taoiseach had said that he been "leaning towards" a complete ban of E-Scooters.
News of this comes after it was recently revealed that six children were placed on life support at Temple Street Children's Hospital over the previous two weeks due to E-scooter related accidents.
Doctors have called for more stringent legislation, claiming that the current laws regarding e scooters are failing to protect children. More on this report here.
