The hosepipe ban will remain in place until the end of September in Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.

However, residents in Cavan, Clare, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath will see the restrictions lifted on 26 August.

Uisce Éireann has extended the Water Conservation Order in the 13 counties where water sources and public supplies are still under pressure.

The nationwide ban was introduced late last month following a prolonged spell of hot, dry weather which placed additional pressure on drinking water supplies.

Under the order, households are prohibited from using hosepipes for non-essential activities such as watering gardens, washing cars and filling paddling pools.

Uisce Éireann said improved conditions and efforts by the public to reduce water use had allowed the restrictions to be lifted in 13 counties.

The organisation said the decision reflected the “positive impact of public water conservation efforts and improved conditions in many areas.”

However, it warned that the situation remains more difficult in parts of the east and south, where water sources continue to need protection.

“In parts of the east and south, however, water sources and public water supplies remain under pressure and require continued protection,” the organisation said.

When the nationwide restrictions were first introduced, Uisce Éireann said they were needed to ensure adequate water supplies for homes, businesses, farms, hospitals, vulnerable customers and other essential services.

The organisation has also urged people to remain mindful of how much water can be used outdoors.

According to Uisce Éireann, a garden hose or sprinkler can use more water in a single hour than the average family uses throughout an entire day.

People in the 13 counties where the ban has been extended are being asked to continue conserving water until the end of September.

Uisce Éireann has thanked the public for helping to protect water supplies and said conditions will continue to be monitored across the country.
