A Galway GAA club has paid an emotional tribute to one of its founding members following his sad passing earlier this month.

Claregalway GAA confirmed that John Carton passed away on Thursday, October 15, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from the local community and those who knew him throughout his years of involvement with the club.

John played an important role in the development of Claregalway's ladies' football team, having been among the founding members who helped establish the team. He also served as a selector for the club's first Ladies Féile team, representing Claregalway alongside Mick O'Connell, Mike Kirwan and Patricia Newell.

In a statement, the club expressed its condolences to John's family and remembered his dedication to the ladies' section.

"Our sympathies are with the Carton family on the passing of Johnny," the club said.

"Johnny was one of the founding members of our ladies' club in Claregalway.

"He is remembered fondly for his committed and friendly approach during his years with the ladies' club."

John had moved to Claregalway from his beloved Tuam, where he went on to play junior football with the club for a number of years.

The club concluded its tribute by offering its prayers for John, writing: "May he rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

John will be sadly missed by his wife Anne, daughter Sarah, son Jonathan, sons-in-law Joe and Alex, and his adored grandchildren Tadhg and Caolán. He is also mourned by the extended Carton and Henderson families, as well as his neighbours and many friends.

Following news of his death, tributes were shared by people wishing to express their condolences and support for the bereaved family.

One person wrote: "Condolences to Anne and family on the sad loss of John he was always a great family man and a gentleman to all he met."

John's contribution to Claregalway GAA, particularly in helping establish the ladies' team, will remain a lasting part of the club's history.
