In celebration of Women in Sport Week, Clare Sports Partnership and Clare Youth Service have announced the launch of a new countywide initiative aimed at supporting female athletes by improving access to period products within sports clubs.

The initiative, developed in collaboration with young people from Clare Comhairle na nÓg, seeks to remove a practical barrier that can affect girls’ participation in sport.

The idea originated from members of Clare Comhairle na nÓg who, while exploring the wider issue of period poverty, identified that many girls do not always have access to period products during training sessions or competitive matches. For some athletes, this can lead to discomfort, embarrassment, or even missing training and games. Recognising this challenge, the young people worked with Clare Youth Service and Clare Sports Partnership to develop a practical solution that would support female players while also protecting their privacy and dignity.

As part of the initiative, specially prepared packs containing period products will be distributed to female sports teams throughout County Clare.

These packs will be stored in team boot bags and included as part of the standard equipment brought to training sessions and matches. By making products readily available when needed, the initiative aims to ensure that players can continue to participate in sport without interruption or unnecessary stress.

John Sweeney, CEO of Clare Sports Partnership, welcomed the project and highlighted its importance during Women in Sport Week. He said the organisation is proud to support an initiative that addresses a real and often overlooked barrier in sport. According to Sweeney, participation should never be impacted by something as natural and normal as menstruation. By including these packs in a team’s regular training and match day kit, clubs are sending a clear message that female athletes are supported, valued, and understood.

Niamh McManus, a sports enthusiast and member of Clare Comhairle na nÓg, explained that the project was driven by young people who openly discussed the challenges girls can face while participating in sport. Through Comhairle na nÓg, they were able to identify the issue and work with local organisations to develop a solution that promotes confidence while respecting privacy.

The partners hope the initiative will not only provide practical support but will also help to normalise conversations around menstruation in sport. By breaking down stigma and raising awareness, the project aims to create more inclusive and supportive sporting environments for girls across County Clare. The period product packs will be rolled out to clubs in the coming weeks, with additional education and awareness supports available for players, coaches, and clubs who wish to learn more about the topic.
