A 31-year-old Cork man who claimed he blacked out and could not recall the reason he violently attacked a pensioner who later died has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for manslaughter.

Aaron Wolfe, of Glentrasna Court in The Glen, admitted responsibility for the death of 69-year-old Florence O'Sullivan, who was originally from Adrigole in west Cork. During sentencing, Wolfe expressed remorse and apologised to Mr O’Sullivan’s family.

The Central Criminal Court heard that Mr O’Sullivan met Wolfe in a Cork city pub on 11 March 2023 while having coffee. The pair were strangers but began chatting, and later travelled together by taxi to locations in The Glen and Mahon before returning to Wolfe’s residence in The Glen.

Evidence presented in court showed Wolfe had consumed six pints of lager in the pub and was also drinking Jägermeister during the taxi journeys.

At approximately 8.15pm, emergency services received reports of a serious assault after the men returned to The Glen. Witnesses reported seeing Mr O’Sullivan lying on the ground covered in blood while Wolfe continued to kick him.

Mr O’Sullivan was taken to Cork University Hospital with severe injuries. He died almost a month later as a result of traumatic brain injuries caused by blunt force trauma.

Wolfe had initially faced a murder charge, but the Director of Public Prosecutions later accepted his guilty plea to manslaughter.

During Garda interviews, Wolfe said an argument occurred because Mr O’Sullivan did not leave the house quickly enough. However, he claimed he experienced a blackout and could not remember the reason for the violent assault.

Defence barrister Brendan Grehan SC told the court his client wished to offer a sincere apology and acknowledged the devastating impact of the attack on the O’Sullivan family.

Sentencing Wolfe, Ms Justice Siobhan Lankford said the offence fell within the most serious category of manslaughter cases. She set a headline sentence of 17 years, noting the attack appeared largely unprovoked.

However, the judge also considered mitigating factors, including Wolfe’s guilty plea, which spared the victim’s family a lengthy trial and benefited the prosecution. She reduced the sentence by three-and-a-half years on that basis.

The court also heard Wolfe had long-standing addiction issues and had spent two years on a vulnerable prisoner regime. Judge Lankford noted he had behaved respectfully in custody and had achieved enhanced prisoner status.

A further reduction of 18 months was applied before the judge suspended the final year of the sentence on strict conditions, including cooperation with probation services, addiction treatment and support with employment upon release.

The resulting sentence was 11 years in prison, backdated to the date Wolfe first entered custody.

Judge Lankford extended her sympathies to Mr O’Sullivan’s family, describing him as a gentle and kind-hearted man whose death had caused profound grief.
