Frustration at Lack of Electric Vehicle Charging Points in Cork

Many busy hubs in the Cork metropolitan area, including Ballincollig and Glanmire, are without EV charging facilities.

Carrigaline has only one station, while the Northside of the city has significantly fewer than the Southside.

The lack of charging points on the city's Northside was highlighted by Green Party Councillor Oliver Moran.

"I was contacted by a resident in the northeast, frustrated at the lack of charging points that support the particular connection on their car," he said. "Other issues are to do with questions like on-going maintenance and charging costs, as well as locations, which could include shared charging points in a housing estate."

Cllr Moran said the rollout of stations was failing to keep up with the increase in ownership of electric vehicles.

"There's a sense that the initial rollout of charging points has fallen behind the take up of electric cars now by the public," he said.

"It is important that the correct investment decisions are researched and thought out before infrastructure is purchased and installed," a statement from Cork City Council said.

The council went on to say that a national review into the demand for charging stations would determine their decisions.

"The outcome of this national review will inform how Cork City Council will progress in this area," they said.

"In the meantime, electric car owners are feeling frustrated as they wait for the analysis to complete and decisions to be made," Cllr Moran said.
