Three new train stations are to be built in Ireland as the Government announce €27 million to be provided in funding.
The three stations are to see two built in Blarney and Water Rock in Cork and Maynooth West in Co Kildare, with all stations to be built by 2029.
This was confirmed by Transport Minister, James Browne, who said that this is being provided by the Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF).
This is part of plans to remove infrastructure barriers to housing development, bringing forward important rail projects, supporting residential progression in key areas identified for new housing. More that 12,000 new homes are set to be provided in the surrounding areas.
According to Sean Canney, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, this new fund make these areas more attractive to live and work in, adding that the new rail projects will happen sooner than expected.
“By ensuring that new housing developments are well served by public transport, we can reduce reliance on private cars, improve connectivity and make these areas more attractive places to live and work", he said.
In Cork, the stations at Blarney and Water Rock which are expected to be built by late 2027 or early 2028, are to facilitate 2,500 and 3,000 homes respectively. This is subject to planning approval.
“By accelerating the delivery of new stations at Blarney, Water Rock and Maynooth West, we are helping to create the conditions for more than 12,000 homes to be built in well-serviced locations with access to high-quality public transport", Minister James Browne said in a statement.
“This is about providing the infrastructure needed to support sustainable communities and bringing forward housing delivery where it is needed most".
