A Garda investigation has begun following a collision involving two cars on the M50, resulting in nine people being injured.

This incident happened southboun, along Junction 12, Firhouse at 5.30am yesterday morning, with eight male teenagers and one one adult male left injured.

It was reported that the eight teenagers were in one of the cars, which was driving down the up-ramp at Junction 12, before it collided head on with a car. They were taken to different hospitals for treatment, with one of them in a critical condition.

The driver of the other vehicle, who is believed to be in his 20s, is also being treated for serious injuries.

Since then, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, Fiosrú said in a statement that an on-call team of investigators attended the scene, while the independent investigation remains ongoing. They investigate incidents involving contact with Gardaí where a member of the public has died or been seriously injured.

However, they did insist that the investigation does not neccesarily mean that a Garda or Gardaí have been accused of any wrongdoing.

"Instead, it means that Fiosrú should independently investigate the incident to ascertain whether or not the act or omission of a garda or gardaí may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person," they said.

Gardaí have also issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone who was travelling on the M50 between Junction 14 and Junction 11 northbound or southbound between 5am and 5.30am or have dash-cam footage to get in touch.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact  Tallaght Garda Station on 01 666 6000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
