A campaign has been launched calling for traffic-calming measures and greater enforcement on the Gort Road in Galway.
One local said that they fear it is "only a matter of time" before somebody else is injured or killed after the incident involving an eight year old boy.
Campaigners are particularly worried about children and families having to cross the busy 1km stretch to reach the playgrounds, tennis courts and other lakeside amenities, as well as nearby Corry’s Field, a popular spot for walkers.
These concerns come shortly after a Galway County Council traffic survey that found that 74% of motorists recorded on the road were exceeding the 50km/h speed limit, with one vehicle clocked at 119km/h.
Bernie Rushe from the Waterfront, Loughrea launched the Gort Road R380 Safety Campaign. She said: “There is no enforcement and no accountability. There is every chance that someone will get knocked down and be seriously injured or killed.”
The campaign is calling on Galway County Council to install table-top ramps at all three pedestrian crossings and to reduce the speed limit.
An online petition has gathered 99 signatures so far, with contributors describing incidents where they witnessed motorists speeding and running red lights at pedestrian crossings.
