Johnny Logan has three Eurovision victories to his name – and, crucially, a spine of artistic integrity to match.
The man once dubbed "Mr Eurovision" hasn’t just won the contest, he’s reshaped it in Ireland’s image, penning and performing songs that continue to loom large in the nation’s cultural memory. But when asked whether he’d return for one last tilt at the pan-European songfest himself, Logan didn’t mince his words: "I don’t think so."
And with that one phrase, a thousand national hopes, and nostalgic fantasies, came crashing down.
Why the reluctance? Logan didn’t offer a lazy platitude about age or irrelevance. Instead, his answer was grounded in the realities of creative labour. To be honest, to do the Eurovision, I’d need to take six months off. I’d need to take the time to write a song that I really believed... that would work." In a sentence, he cut through the modern illusion of instant virality and reminded us that greatness, in music and in life, takes time. And craft. And commitment.
That being said, Logan didn’t rule out being involved in a different capacity. Far from it. In fact, his passion for nurturing homegrown talent was palpable.
"We've so many great young artists in this country," he said, before hinting that mentoring might be the more fitting role at this stage in his life and career. But even here, there were conditions. Mentorship, to Logan, isn’t about showing up at the final dress rehearsal for a photo op. It’s a full arc: "You need to be with them at the beginning, with them during the contest, and then also after the contest to make sure they get the most out of the contest."
The final blow came with a brutal, and accurate, assessment of the modern music machine: "Your 15 minutes of fame is now 15 seconds – and counting."
It’s a typically Logan line: equal parts mournful and razor-sharp, tinged with hard-earned wisdom from decades navigating a business that chews up talent as fast as it spotlights it.
Johnny Logan may never return to the Eurovision stage, but if Ireland is serious about reclaiming its former glory, they’d be fools not to take him up on the offer. So long as they’re willing to do it properly.
