Nelly Furtado has signalled a return to the stage, teasing new music just months after stepping back from live performances following a wave of body-shaming harassment.

The Promiscuous and Maneater hitmaker took to Instagram to share footage from a studio session with acclaimed producer Boi-1da, confirming she is working on fresh material.

Engaging her two million followers, she wrote: 'New muuuusic! Excited to share this and grateful to be part of this exciting collabo @boi1da x @perfectpitchcanada x @canadasoccer.' She added: 'Electric Circus out April 10!' — hinting at a new release that could mark her latest musical chapter.

The update comes after Furtado revealed in October that she would be stepping away from performing, citing the impact of persistent online abuse focused on her appearance.

The singer, who rose to global fame in the early 2000s, became the target of cruel commentary on social media, with critics scrutinising her body during recent live shows and public appearances. The backlash highlighted the intense and often unrealistic expectations placed on female artists, particularly those returning to the spotlight after time away.

Furtado addressed the issue head-on at the time, pushing back against the criticism and calling out the toxic culture of body shaming in the industry. While she did not shy away from sharing her hurt, she also made it clear that the comments would not define her.

Still, the volume and persistence of the harassment ultimately led her to cancel performances, prioritising her wellbeing over continuing to perform under that level of scrutiny.

The situation sparked wider conversations among fans and within the music industry, with many rallying behind the singer and condemning the abuse. Supporters praised her for speaking openly about the issue, noting that even established global stars are not immune to online toxicity.

Her experience echoed similar stories from other female artists, reinforcing ongoing concerns about how women’s bodies are policed in the public eye.

In the months since stepping back, Furtado has remained creatively active behind the scenes. Rather than retreating completely, she has focused on songwriting and studio work, collaborating with major names and exploring new sounds.

Her latest partnership with Boi-1da — known for his work with some of the biggest artists in the world — suggests a fresh, contemporary direction that could reintroduce her to a new generation of listeners.

She has also maintained a connection with fans through social media, offering glimpses into her creative process and personal life. These updates have painted a picture of an artist regrouping on her own terms, taking time to rebuild confidence and rediscover the joy of making music without the pressures of constant public scrutiny.

Now, with new music on the horizon and a more positive outlook, Furtado appears ready to step back into the spotlight. While it remains to be seen when she will fully return to live performances, her latest teaser suggests that a comeback is firmly underway — one shaped by resilience, experience and a renewed sense of control over her career.
