Terrorism-related charges have been filed in Austria following an alleged plot to target Taylor Swift’s concerts in Vienna last summer, in a case that ultimately led to the cancellation of three shows on her record-breaking Eras Tour.
This Monday, public prosecutors in Vienna confirmed that a 21-year-old man has been formally charged over plans to carry out an attack at one of Swift’s performances in August 2024. The unnamed suspect, who Austrian media previously identified as Beran A., has been in custody since his arrest in August.

According to prosecutors, the defendant allegedly declared allegiance to the so-called Islamic State group by sharing propaganda materials and videos through various messaging platforms. Authorities further claim he obtained online instructions for constructing a shrapnel bomb using triacetone triperoxide (TATP), an explosive commonly associated with extremist attacks, and is accused of producing a small quantity of the substance.
Investigators also allege that the suspect made multiple attempts to illegally purchase weapons abroad and bring them into Austria. Prosecutors say the criminal case will proceed in Wiener Neustadt, a town located south of Vienna. A spokesperson for the Vienna public prosecutor’s office confirmed that the accused remains in custody.
The charges stem from a dramatic security development that unfolded just days before Swift was due to perform three sold-out nights in Vienna as part of her historic Eras Tour. Austrian authorities announced in early August 2024 that they had foiled an apparent plot targeting the concerts, prompting the immediate cancellation of all three shows.
The decision sent shockwaves through Swift’s global fanbase, particularly as the Eras Tour had become one of the most significant live music events in modern history. The Vienna concerts were expected to draw tens of thousands of fans from across Europe, including many travelling from Ireland.

Taylor Swift, "I don't care if they write: Taylor Swift comes out against Trump.. I need to be on the right side of history" First Carol Vorderman, a celeb, speaking out. Now Taylor Swift, a celeb, speaking out. We need more people with influence to have the courage to call out the bad and encourage the good 🙏 Taylor Swift continues, calling out Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, saying, she "votes against fair pay for women.. Against the reauthorisation of the Violence Against Women Act which is just basically protecting us from domestic abuse and stalking.. She thinks if you're a gay couple or look like a gay couple you should be allowed to be kicked out of a restaurant.. It's basic human rights"
At the time, Austrian officials credited international cooperation for preventing what could have been a devastating attack. The United States played a key role in sharing intelligence that contributed to the disruption of the alleged threat.
Then-White House national security spokesman John Kirby confirmed the American involvement in August 2024, stating: “The United States has an enduring focus on our counterterrorism mission. We work closely with partners all over the world to monitor and disrupt threats. And so as part of that work, the United States did share information with Austrian partners to enable the disruption of a threat to Taylor Swift’s concerts there in Vienna.”
While authorities did not publicly disclose specific operational details at the time, the cancellation was described as a precautionary measure following the assessment of a credible threat.
Swift herself addressed the cancellations in a statement shared with fans shortly after the decision was announced. She said she was “heartbroken” over the news and expressed gratitude to law enforcement agencies for acting swiftly to ensure public safety. She added that the safety of fans, crew and performers would “always be the priority.”
The Vienna cancellations marked one of the rare instances in which Eras Tour dates were scrapped outright due to security concerns. The tour, which began in 2023 and has broken multiple attendance and revenue records worldwide, has been widely praised for its elaborate production and marathon-length performances spanning Swift’s entire catalogue.
Security at Swift’s concerts has been notably tight throughout the tour, reflecting both the scale of the events and the heightened global awareness around potential threats to major public gatherings. Large-scale concerts across Europe have faced increased scrutiny in recent years amid broader counterterrorism efforts.
For fans who had planned to attend the Vienna shows, the cancellations were deeply disappointing, but many publicly expressed relief that authorities intervened before any harm could occur. Refunds were issued to ticket holders, and additional security reviews were carried out across subsequent European tour stops.
The filing of formal terrorism charges now moves the case into the next legal phase, bringing renewed attention to the seriousness of the alleged plot. If convicted, the accused could face significant prison time under Austria’s counterterrorism laws.
As the legal proceedings begin in Wiener Neustadt, the case stands as a stark reminder of the security challenges facing global touring artists — and the complex international coordination often required to keep large-scale cultural events safe.
