With four decades of retrospective reverence behind it, Live Aid is now remembered as the kind of event that realigns culture, legacy, and history in a single afternoon. And within that grand spectacle, Queen’s performance — soaring, thunderous, utterly definitive — is still held up as the moment when the band not only stole the show but immortalised themselves.
Which makes it all the more surreal that Bob Geldof didn’t even want them there.
According to Live Aid promoter Harvey Goldsmith, Geldof’s initial stance on Queen was flat-out dismissive. “No, they’ve peaked. I don’t think they should play,” Bob reportedly said when the band were floated as candidates for a late-afternoon slot. This wasn’t just a shrug — this was a hard no. The man behind Band Aid genuinely believed Queen were past it.
Goldsmith, to his credit, didn’t fold. He pushed back hard, insisting, “There’s no better act that could do this than Queen.” He wasn’t wrong. Queen’s technical command, Freddie’s stratospheric charisma, their arena-tested chemistry — all of it added up to a band uniquely built for a moment of Live Aid’s size and global reach.
And yet, irony doesn’t so much enter the story as barrel through it. Because after Bob was convinced, Queen themselves needed talking around. Brian May recently admitted that only Roger Taylor was instantly on board. The rest? Not so much.
“We thought it was going to be a disaster,” May told Radio Times. “Freddie, in particular, said: ‘I haven’t got the right feeling for this.’”
It wasn’t just stage fright. It was a sense that the scale of the event might crush its own ambition. But Bob came back, and this time, the message was clear: you'll regret it if you're not there.
According to May, the conversation ended like this:
“[Freddie] said: ‘Oh f*** it, we’ll do it.’”
And thank God he did. Because what followed wasn’t just a gig. It was Queen’s resurrection. And a billion people watched it happen in real time.
