A Garda Road Safety operation is underway this bank holiday weekend. The operation has already recorded a driver going 130km/h on a 60km/h road in Cavan.

The operation has been underway since 7am Thursday morning and is set to continue until Tuesday.

Gardaí alongside the Road Safety Authority have warned that we are currently in one of the busiest periods on Irish roads, as festivals and concerts are underway, and bank holiday transport closures are also taking place.

So far 56 arrests have been made for driving under the influence. Gardaí are also targeting speeding, distracted driving and not wearing a seatbelt. 630 drivers were caught speeding on the first day of the operation alone.

Notable Offences Include:

  •  76km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R402 Edenderry, Co. Offaly;
  • 95km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Monaghan Road, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan ;
  • 120km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R390, Walderstown, Co. Westmeath ;
  • 121km/h in a 100km/h zone on N3, Belturbet, Co. Cavan

The number of deaths on Irish roads this year is already at 70, setting this year on track to be the deadliest year on Irish roads in 10 years.

The Garda operation is following from the May bank holiday when over 3,950 people were recorded speeding, and arrests were made for intoxicated driving.
