The victim of last week's stabbing in Belfast, is out of an induced coma, but may still lose sight in his right eye, according to his family.
This happened after Stephen Ogilvie was stabbed at Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast, which caused him to lose his left eye, and suffer deep cuts to his head, face and back.
The man charged with attacking Mr Ogilvie, is 30 year old, Hadi Alodid, who appeared before Belfast Magistrate's Court, facing charges of attempted murder over the incident. Mr Alodid, a Sudanese national, had entered Northern Ireland across the border via bus in February 2023, having flown to Dublin from Paris.
He was then granted leave to remain in the UK until 2028, having claimed asylum upon arrival.
He is next due to appear in court via videolink on July 8. He has been remanded in custody until that date.
Speaking about this, Stephen Ogilvie's family have said that he is out of his induced coma, and thanked people for their kindness and generosity at this difficult time.
While they were "relieved" that he was out of the coma, his family added that he faces "significant challenges ahead", which include the possibility that he may lose the sight in his right eye.
In a statement, they said: "We have been truly humbled by the kindness of so many people, many of whom have never met our family".
This incident led to major anti-immigration protests in the city last week, which saw homes, cars and a bus set fire to, with people also targeted due to their race. At the time of writing, 35 arrests had been made, with 23 people charges following this disorder.
Footage of this incident was shared across social media, and several right wing channels, which encouraged people to protest. Elon Musk, owner of X, also shared a post, announcing locations for this protest and adding the message: "Do not make peace with evil. Destroy it".
