Wedding bells are set to ring a little louder this Christmas as new data shows a surge in festive celebrations across Ireland. A SaveMyDay.ie survey of more than 400 couples reveals that winter weddings have jumped by nearly 10% since 2024, with affordability, availability, and cosy seasonal atmosphere driving the trend.
According to the findings, couples increasingly view winter as the ideal time to exchange vows. Many cited better value for money, as venues often offer significantly reduced off-season rates, along with greater availability, particularly for intimate or boutique-style celebrations. A growing number also noted the advantage of having family and friends home during Christmas and New Year, especially those travelling from abroad.
The survey highlights the unique appeal of winter nuptials, with couples praising the relaxed mood of guests and the “event to look forward to” feel that winter weddings provide. Sparkling décor, candlelit ceremonies, roaring fires and even the chance of snow add to what many described as unmatched romance and atmosphere.
Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures show 20,348 marriages were registered in Ireland in 2024, including 668 same-sex unions. While Ireland’s overall marriage rates have continued to decline in recent years, the rise in winter celebrations points to a shifting preference among couples seeking ambience without the summer price tag.
In Cork, the trend is especially strong, with local favourites such as Fernhill House in Clonakilty—recently voted one of Europe’s top wedding venues—reporting increased interest in festive celebrations that blend seasonal charm with West Cork hospitality.
Ireland’s shift mirrors a broader global movement. Around the world, winter weddings have become one of the fastest-growing seasonal choices, driven by similar motivations: cost savings, guest flexibility, and the growing popularity of eco-friendly and off-season celebrations. The global wedding industry, now valued at over $300 billion, is seeing couples prioritise both romance and practicality.
Wedding expert and SaveMyDay.ie co-owner Shell Holden said winter weddings are fast becoming a mainstream choice. “Winter weddings are no longer a niche choice, they’re becoming a mainstream trend,” she said. “The combination of festive charm, budget benefits, and the cosy atmosphere of the season is inspiring more couples than ever to embrace winter dates for their celebrations. Ireland’s growth reflects what we’re seeing globally, that winter is fast becoming one of the most romantic and practical times to tie the knot.”
As 2025 approaches, the once-quiet winter wedding season is shaping up to be one of the most in-demand times of the year for Irish couples saying “I do.”
