DJ Carey has pleaded guilty to charges of deception, and admitted to defrauding a number of people by falsely claiming he needed money for cancer treatment.
The former Kilkenny hurler was due to stand trial on 21 fraud and forgery charges, but a jury wasn’t required after he pleaded guilty to 10 of those charges.
Denis Carey, as he was named in court, briefly addressed the court today, only to enter his guilty pleas.
He was accused of falsely claiming he had cancer to solicit money from a number of individuals between 2014 and 2022.
The court heard he requires ongoing treatment for a heart condition that required surgery last year, and there was also mention of mental health issues.
The 54-year-old, who won five All-Ireland hurling titles with Kilkenny, was allowed to remain on bail ahead of his sentence hearing which will take place on October 29th.
It's then that the particulars of the crimes he has admitted to will be laid bare in court, while the victims of his fraud will also be given an opportunity to address the court on that date.
