Liverpool and Portugal footballer Diogo Jota has died aged 28.
Jota died in a car crash while travelling with his brother Andre Silva when they crashed in Zamora, Spain. His brother Andre Silva who was also a professional footballer. He was also killed in the crash.
Spanish law enforcement agency shared this statement to the BBC.
"The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking", they said. "It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora".
"The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed".
Following this, the Portuguese Football Federation paid tribute to Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
"The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva in Spain this morning", they said.
"Diogo Jota was not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his team-mates and opponents. He had a contagious joy and was a reference point in his own community".
They added: "On behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation and myself, I would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Diogo and Andre as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the respective clubs of the players".
"We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day".
Jota who scored 14 international goals for Portugal, had married his long term partner Rute Cardosa. The couple have three children.
The footballer signed for Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, going on to score 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club.
He was part of the Liverpool side who won the 2024/2025 Premier League title under manager Arne Slot. Jota also won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in his time with the club, as well as being a Champions League runner up in 2022.
A number of tributes were paid to Jota, including current club Liverpool, as well as former player and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.
"Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning. Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids", Carragher wrote.
