Galway City Council has given the green light to the Blue Teapot Theatre to expand their premises.
The award winning theatre was founded in 1996 and has "evolved from a community arts project within the Brothers of Charity Services Galway to become an award winning independent theatre company that supports an increasingly rich and diverse practice."
The Blue Teapot Theatre work "radically transform theatre practices by telling stories through the lens of disability, paving the way for inclusive practices to become the norm." In a statement on their website, they stated that they aim to push boundaries of what is possible and "celebrate creativity and challenge the narrative about intellectual disability."
The theatre that is currently based at Munster Avenue now has secured permission to expand into retail premises located on the corner of William Street.
According to reports, the space will be used for rehearsal's and city planners have given approval subject to routine conditions.
Last month, the Blue Teapot Theatre received €50,000 in funding to help upgrade their facilities in the city.
The funding was awarded as a grant under Stream E of the Cultural Capital Scheme, a €1.4m capital investment scheme, which focuses on enhancing the current stock of arts and culture centres throughout the country.
The theatre works to tell stories through the lens of disability, and aims to pave the way for inclusive practices to become the norm.
