The seizure formed part of an ongoing investigation led jointly by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and the Revenue Customs Service. The operation remains active, with inquiries continuing into the origin and intended distribution of the drugs.
Authorities confirmed that the wider enforcement effort is part of an intensified crackdown on illegal drug supply networks. On 22 May, a combined total of an estimated €2.7 million worth of controlled drugs was seized in related operations across the region.
The seizures come amid increased national attention on drug policy and enforcement. The inaugural Irish Coalition for Drug Reform event, held on 20 May, brought together policymakers, advocates and civil society groups to discuss approaches to drug legislation and reform in Ireland. The coalition focuses on broader debates around the Irish Council for Civil Liberties and others advocating for evidence-based policy approaches.
At the event, Claire McEvoy, Head of Policy and Research at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, said: “We’re actually at a pivotal moment in Ireland with regard to our drug policy.”
Discussions at the conference included the operation of the Misuse of Drugs Acts, particularly in relation to the criminalisation of personal possession of substances such as cannabis and cocaine.
While major seizures such as this are typically aimed at disrupting large-scale trafficking operations rather than individual users, Gardaí have stressed that investigations remain ongoing and further arrests or developments have not been ruled out.
